Broadway Impact is thrilled to announce our newest venture. We are teaming with the American Foundation for Equal Rights to produce '8', a new play by Academy Award winner, Dustin Lance Black (Milk) on Broadway and at a theater near you.
September 19, at the Eugene O'Neil Theatre on Broadway, '8' had its world premiere as an exclusive one night only staged reading, directed by Tony Award-winner Joe Mantello. The reading benefitted The American Foundation for Equal Rights in their Federal Court fight for marriage equality.
Broadway Impact and AFER will now begin licensing ‘8’ to university, community and professional theaters across the country in an effort to spur dialogue and understanding around marriage equality issues.
WHAT IS ‘8’?
‘8’ is an unprecedented account of the Federal District Court trial of Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the case filed by AFER to overturn Prop. 8, which eliminated the right to marry for gay and lesbian couples in California. '8' is based on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.
‘8’ follows a proud tradition of documentary theater. Plays like The Laramie Project and Vagina Monologues changed the national conversation about hate crimes and domestic violence. We aim to change the national conversation about marriage equality with '8'.
